In a Friday interview with CBS Mornings, Hilary Duff confirmed that one of the songs, “We Don’t Talk,” from her new album is about her older sister, Haylie Duff. “It’s definitely about my sister and just absolutely the most lonely part of my existence,” the 38-year-old said when asked about the song, which includes the lines “I’m not sure when it happened / Not even sure what it was about,” and references coming from “the same home, the same blood.” She added, “It’s not having my sister in my life at the moment, and I really struggled with thinking about including that on the record.”
Duff explained that she wanted to make an album about “connection,” which should include songs that reflect her life. When asked if she hoped Haylie would hear the song, the singer said she didn’t “think that would help.” She added, “I think I have to just exist as a person on my own and do what I want to do.”
The Duff sisters were inseparable throughout the aughts — they often acted and sang together (you might remember their hit 2004 cover of “Our Lips Are Sealed”). It’s unclear what exactly happened between them, but according to Us Weekly, the sisters were last photographed together in 2019 and have since stopped interacting with each other on social media. Duff, who’s gearing up for a big pop-star comeback tour, has been speaking more about their apparent falling-out while doing press for the new album. “That’s my family. Those are the people that affect you the most, take up the most space naturally as a human who’s born into something,” she told Glamour earlier this week. “Just because you’re born into a family doesn’t mean that it always stays together. You can only control your side and your street.”
