Metro area schools are closed again today as the cleanup from what has been an unrelenting winter season continues on the northeast Avalon.
The mayor of St. John’s says city officials felt there was no need to call a State of Emergency on Monday with most municipal and provincial government offices, as well as schools – including Memorial – closed for the day.
Mayor Danny Breen was responding to questions as to why a State of Emergency wasn’t called despite some 55 cm of snow having fallen on the capital city on Sunday.

Breen told reporters yesterday that traffic levels were such that they felt snow clearing would not be significantly impeded.
“We were able to bring traffic around town down to a point where we can be effective with our snow clearing operations and to do it safely as well.”
In the meantime the city is requesting permission from the federal government to dump snow in the harbour to help move snow clearing along faster.
“You can get more snow moved quicker” says Breen.
