Connecticut superintendents weigh makeup days as snow closures pile up after Blizzard Calvin

GLASTONBURY, CT (WFSB) – School districts across Connecticut are weighing how to make up lost instructional time as back-to-back winter storms have pushed snow day totals higher, with some districts warning that additional closures could cut into spring break.
Glastonbury canceled classes for the second day in a row on Tuesday as crews continued clearing snow from school grounds and roads.
The district considered doing it again because of Wednesday’s snow.

Glastonbury Superintendent Dr. Alan Bookman said another snow day would mean adding a day to the end of the school year in June. Any closures beyond that could reduce April vacation.
“I really want there to be school [Wednesday],” Bookman said. “If anyone from Glastonbury is watching this, students, you can expect there to be school [Wednesday], unless it’s really awful and I have no choice.”
Bookman said he would be in a group text with other superintendents early Wednesday morning to make the call. Each school board determines how to make up snow days. State law requires students to attend a minimum of 180 days.
Aly Hoagland, a Glastonbury parent, said she is ready for her children to return to school.
“I think structure and routine is good for them,” Hoagland said. “It’s fun for a day, and then it’s nice to get back into that routine.”
On the prospect of losing spring break days, Hoagland said the family would adjust.
“April break is nice — the weather is better, gets us outside,” Hoagland said. “But it is what it is.”
Her daughter Layla, 9, has had three snow days so far, including two this week.
