Wednesday’s EFL predictions

Stoke City vs Oxford United

Oxford have been in the Championship relegation zone since the start of the year, but they are refusing to give up on their survival scrap and can boost their points tally against out-of-form Stoke at the bet365 Stadium.

For clubs of Oxford’s size it is an ongoing challenge to stay competitive in the second tier.

However, there were plenty of positives to take from Saturday’s goalless draw at Middlesbrough, which was more than a rearguard action.

Matt Bloomfield’s side pressed forward when given the chance and struck the frame of Boro’s goal on two occasions in an evenly matched opening half.

The second period was balanced in favour of the home side, but Oxford rode out the storm and were rewarded with a share of spoils which gives a major boost to their confidence.

Having matched one of the major promotion contenders, Oxford should be ready to challenge mid-table Stoke in the Potteries.

Every Championship team has something to play for but an uneventful end to the season looks likely for the injury-hit Potters, who have slipped into the bottom half.

Mark Robins’s side have failed to win any of their last seven games and needed a double from defender Ben Wilmot to salvage a 2-2 draw from Saturday’s fixture at home to Leicester.

Stoke have not won a league home game since mid-December and they look opposable against a diligent and determined Oxford side eager to fight all the way in their battle against the drop.

Millwall vs Birmingham City

Millwall’s strong start to 2026 was interrupted by Saturday’s dismal 3-1 loss at home to Portsmouth but a positive response can be expected from the promotion-chasing Lions, who look overpriced to defeat Birmingham.

Staying in promotion contention is all about maintaining a level of consistency, and Millwall have usually shown the right mentality in the aftermath of a poor performance.

Alex Neil’s side have suffered back-to-back losses on just one occasion this season and they can respond with a victory over Birmingham, who have been beaten nine times on their Championship travels.

Sheffield United vs Coventry City

Leaders Coventry have reasserted themselves after a winter wobble and can make it three wins from three by defeating Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

The Sky Blues are feeling confident after victories at home to Middlesbrough and away to West Brom.

They can come through a tricky test against the Blades, who are missing suspended midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
