Ford has recalled more than 410,000 SUVs due to a faulty suspension, which can increase crash risk.
Ford Motor Company recalled 412,774 2017-2019 Explorer vehicles because a fracture in the rear toe link suspension may result in a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall report. Ford estimates that only about 1% of the selected models are affected by the recall.
As of Feb. 20, Ford was aware of two accidents globally that may be related to a rear toe link suspension fracture, according to the NHTSA recall report. Ford is not aware of any injuries related to the issue.
Faulty rear toe link suspensions in the recalled vehicles were first analyzed by Ford’s Field Review Committee in 2021, according to the NHTSA recall report. In January, the NHTSA contacted Ford after receiving five Vehicle Owner Questionnaires citing issues with steering control related to the suspension part, to which Ford promptly opened an investigation.
The affected vehicles were produced with cross-axis ball joint parts and rear suspension toe links that may fracture under certain circumstances, the NHTSA recall report states. The particular combination of ball joints and toe links in the affected vehicles was discontinued in 2019.

What to do if your Ford vehicle is recalled
Ford of Lincoln dealerships will replace the rear toe link suspension for free, the NHTSA recall report states. Notification letters are expected to be mailed to vehicle owners between March 9 and 13.
The vehicles were not manufactured in VIN order, making searching for the vehicles online not as straightforward. For more information, consumers may call Ford’s toll-free line at 1-866-436-7332 or contact a local Ford by Lincoln dealership. The NHTSA recall number for this case is 21V537.
