Arrest made in shooting death of millionaire at Potomac senior facility

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (7News) — Montgomery County police have arrested a man accused of opening fire on a Maryland State Trooper during a traffic stop and killing millionaire Robert Fuller, who was fatally shot at a senior living facility in Potomac, Maryland.

Valentine’s Day at an assisted living facility in Potomac turned into a homicide investigation after 87-year-old Fuller was found murdered inside his apartment at Cogir Assisted Living.

Fuller was described as an unlikely victim. He moved to the facility after a long and successful career as an attorney in Maine. He was also a philanthropist and a self-published author of a murder mystery that is still listed on Amazon.

As detectives worked the case, Montgomery County police publicly released video of a suspect at the assisted living building. Investigators later narrowed in on a person of interest.

Early Tuesday morning, Maryland State Police reported that someone shot at a trooper in Baltimore during a traffic stop. State police released images of a person and a car connected to that incident. Authorities later determined the two cases were linked when a shell casing from the Baltimore shooting matched the gun used in Fuller’s killing, leading both agencies to realize they were looking for the same suspect.

The man, 22-year-old Maurquise James of Baltimore, was an employee of the assisted living facility.

In the Baltimore incident, state police said shortly before 3:30 a.m., a trooper attempted a traffic stop and as he approached the vehicle, the driver opened his door slightly and opened fire. The trooper was not hit but was injured during the incident. The trooper suffered powder burns due to the close proximity of the shooting, according to investigators.

In a final twist, James was arrested Tuesday when he showed up for a court date on an unrelated traffic charge.

“We completely understood the panic and the fear that the murder of Mr. Fuller brought out in that community. We took that very, very seriously,” said Capt. Sean Gagen. “The investigators have worked incredibly hard, long days, long nights, time away from their family because they knew the importance of identifying a suspect in this case as quickly as they possibly could.”
