Police attacked in drug accused escape bid

A series of incidents across Jalandhar Rural district has led to the registration of multiple criminal cases involving an alleged attack on a police team to free an NDPS accused, an armed robbery at gunpoint and separate narcotics recoveries under the NDPS Act and the Arms Act.

According to police sources, a serious case was registered at Police Station Mehatpur after a police party was allegedly attacked in village Dharme Diyan Chhanna while handling an accused in a narcotics case. The FIR under Sections 323, 341, 353, 186, 506, 225 and 332 of the IPC was lodged on the statement of SI Kashmir Singh, incharge of Police Post Dharme Diyan Chhanna, through ASI Amrik Lal.

The incident is linked to FIR No. 31 dated February 26, 2026, registered under Sections 21B and 22/61/85 of the NDPS Act, in which Hans Raj alias Hansa, a resident of the same village, had been arrested. Police alleged that Jasvir Singh alias Veeru and Sukhchain Singh alias Sukha, along with Paramjit Kaur, Ajay and three to four unidentified persons, surrounded the police team with the alleged intention of forcibly rescuing the accused from custody. The group is accused of using sharp-edged weapons and physically assaulting police personnel, causing injuries during the confrontation.

In connection with the obstruction and alleged attempt to free the accused, another FIR (No. 32 dated February 26, 2026) has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Police Station Mehatpur. Two of the named accused have been arrested, while efforts are underway to apprehend others.

Earlier, in the NDPS case against Hans Raj alias Hansa, police claimed to have recovered 15 grams of heroin, 100 loose pink-coloured intoxicant tablets, a digital weighing scale and a motorcycle from his possession.

The accused remains in custody and further investigation is being conducted to trace the supply chain of the contraband.

In a separate incident in Nakodar, police registered a case under Sections 304(2) and 3(5) of the BNS along with Sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act following a complaint of armed robbery. The complainant, Khushat Goyal, alleged that unidentified persons intercepted him, displayed a pistol, fired a shot toward the ground to intimidate him and forcibly snatched his motorcycle before fleeing. Police have initiated a probe to identify the suspects and verify the sequence of events.

Meanwhile, as part of an ongoing anti-drug drive, Police Station Phillaur registered a case under Sections 21B and 22/61/85 of the NDPS Act against Anmol Kumar alias Anu, a resident of Mohalla Ravidaspura, Phillaur. During routine patrolling near the Old Bus Stand in Phillaur, police allegedly recovered 4 grams of heroin from his possession. The accused has been arrested and further investigation is in progress.
