Michael Carrick comes into the game having won all four of his home league games in charge (one in 2021, three in this spell) and riding the wave of the support that comes from producing such results. Still unbeaten as United boss, he takes on a manager at the other end of the fans-popularity spectrum.

Oliver Glasner may have guided Crystal Palace to their first ever major trophy but recent disparaging remarks by the manager have alienated all that goodwill and support. Carrick, meanwhile, dismissed any speculation that this match could be a prequel to Carrick vs Glasner for the United job this summer. “It is not something that would cross my mind until you mentioned it,” he said in the pre-match press conference. “It doesn’t make any difference whatsoever. I have total respect for Crystal Palace and Oliver, in terms of the team that they are and the role they are doing. But it’s the next game for us.”
