Riley Green Gets Candid about His “Troubled” Character on ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff

- Riley Green is starring alongside Luke Grimes on Marshals.
- The two have become good friends, and Luke encouraged Riley to try out acting.
- Riley talks about his role as Garrett, a former Navy SEAL he describes as “troubled.”
Riley Green is joining the Yellowstone universe, and country music fans could not be more excited. But, not much was revealed about Garrett, the character he plays on Marshals, until now.
In the spinoff series (which, unlike Yellowstone, will air on CBS), Luke Grimes reprises his role as Kayce Dutton, who has left his home at the Yellowstone Ranch to join the U.S. Marshals. Viewers will see familiar faces Mo Brings Plenty (Mo), Brecken Merrill (Tate), and Gil Birmingham (Thomas Rainwater) returning to their Yellowstone roles.
How does Riley Green fit it? The singer explained his character to ExtraTV. “Garrett is a former Navy SEAL, was on the teams with Luke. He’s troubled,” Riley said. “He’s got some issues in what they went through together back in the day. As he shows back up, he’s struggling to deal with all that, and Kayce is constantly trying to help him and let him into that Western lifestyle and what they have out there as Marshals. It’s a pretty vulnerable character. He’s had a tough time, and that was the cool thing for me to try to get into that position and mentally go there. It was a great character for me.”
Fans will want to know if Riley will bring his singing talents to the show. He teased, “I get to play a little bit. Garrett does play a little guitar.”
Riley credits his friend Luke Grimes for inspiring him to take the leap into acting. Riley helped the Yellowstone star with his music (Luke’s new album, Redbird, is dropping on April 3), and Luke returned the favor with Riley’s acting career. “It was a really fun experience for me,” he said. “Because it’s something I went into somewhat nervous…I don’t get nervous to play shows anymore, I’ve been doing it so long, but this was a brand-new thing for me. It was a big learning curve, and I’m glad they were patient with me.”
The “Worst Way” singer is certainly giving viewers something to look forward to when Marshals premieres on March 1.
