I-95 in Newark will see daytime lane closures this week

Flyover from Route 896 south to I-95 north opened

A flyover from Route 896 south to I-95 north opened the morning of Sept. 27 bringing one of Delaware’s largest traffic projects closer to ending.

There could be some slow rolling on Interstate 95 in Newark this week.

DelDOT announced a daytime lane closure for truck access on March 2 through March 5 from the Route 896 exit in Newark to the Biden Welcome Center on northbound I-95 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m..

Multiple lanes will be closed in the same direction and area during the overnight hours on March 5. The lanes will be closed from 9 p.m. on March 4 to 5 a.m. on March 5.

DelDOT said the closures are because of bridge work.

The ongoing project of improving the ramps around the Route 896 and I-95 interchange in Newark has been going since 2023, with a planned end date of summer of this year. The project’s page on DelDOT’s website says the project is in response to crashes and increased congestion on that stretch of road.

“The ramp from I-95 NB to SR 896 remains closed,” the latest update on the page says. “Ramps from SR 896 NB and SB to I-95 SB were closed in May to allow work to progress in this area. SR 896 was reduced to a single lane in each direction to complete bridge rehabilitation.”
