Report: Lions trading running back David Montgomery to Texans

The Detroit Lions are splitting up one of the more formidable duos in the NFL.
The Lions have agreed to trade running back David Montgomery to the Houston Texans for a fourth-round pick, a seventh-round pick and offensive lineman Juice Scruggs, The Athletic reported on Monday.
Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs had formed a strong partnership in recent years, helping the Lions reach the NFC title game in 2023 and go 15-2 in 2024. Montgomery rushed for over 1,000 yards in 2023 but his usage since has dropped as Gibbs has grown into one of the top running backs in the sport. In 2025, Montgomery rushed for a career-low 716 yards and eight touchdowns as the Lions finished 9-8 and missed the playoffs.
The Texans are counting on Montgomery to be one piece that upgrades their offence to match the elite defensive play that propelled them into the playoffs last year.
