On-loan midfielder Jack Grealish has admitted he is determined to “come back stronger” as he issued an update on his recovery from a season-ending injury. The 30-year-old has missed the last six matches after suffering a stress fracture in the 1-0 win against former club Aston Villa on January 18.

David Moyes then confirmed in a press conference that Grealish, who joined the Blues on loan from Manchester City last summer, is expected to go under the knife and miss the remainder of the season.

A matter of days later, Grealish posted on social media following surgery, admitting he is “gutted” but vowed to come back “fitter, stronger and better than before”. He also hinted that he could remain at Everton beyond the end of his season-long loan, praising everyone at the club for the support he has had since his move.

And now, three weeks after Grealish had surgery, he has posted another update.

In an Instagram story showing him working out at the gym, the England international said in a caption: “So so locked in to come back stronger than ever [flexed bicep emoji and football emoji].”

Grealish made 22 appearances for Everton before picking up the season-ending injury, scoring twice and providing six assists. He became a vital part of Moyes’ starting XI at the Hill Dickinson Stadium and the Scot was gutted to lose him for the remainder of the season.

“It’s really disappointing for the player, and for the club and all of us,” Moyes said in January. “He’s such an important part, a big character, big experience for us. We will miss him, he’s done a lot of good things for us.”

Joe Thomas, the Liverpool ECHO’s Everton FC correspondent, gave a Grealish update in his latest Royal Blue newsletter: “Jack Grealish underwent surgery on the stress fracture to his foot in February and, while he is on loan at Everton, he is carrying out his rehabilitation with the club.

“The playmaker is still wearing a protective boot but the hope is that he will soon progress to be able to start working in the pool.

“His influence around the squad remains positive despite the frustration over an injury that ruined what was developing into a really strong season.”

Since Grealish has been out, Everton have been in mixed form, winning two, drawn two and lost two of the six fixtures he has missed. However, the Blues did earn a stunning 3-2 success at Newcastle United last time out.

Goals from Jarrad Branthwaite, Beto and Thierno Barry earned Everton a second successive win at St James’ Park to boost the club’s hopes of qualifying in a European spot.

But Moyes refused to mention the ‘Europe’ word in his post-match press conference. “Every time I say it we fluff our lines, so I’m just going to say we can keep challenging in the top half of the league and see where it goes from there,” Moyes, who has a 39% win record since returning to the Toffees 12 months ago, said.

Moyes did, however, add: “I’m honestly saying to you, I told the players that I wanted to get us into Europe. At West Ham, we nearly got relegated and the following season we made Europe so I didn’t think it was impossible to be done, but every time I get back to Hill Dickinson I feel like it’s getting harder and harder.”

Everton are next in action when they host 19th-place Burnley on Tuesday. They sit in eighth and three points behind Brentford in seventh heading into the clash against the Clarets.
