HATTIESBURG — Southern Miss baseball defeated Mississippi State in a wild game for its 11th consecutive win.
The No. 11 Golden Eagles (11-1) took down the No. 4 Bulldogs 7-6 at Pete Taylor Park on March 3. It’s also their fifth straight win against MSU (11-2) at Pete Taylor Park.
Southern Miss had a hot start, scoring the first five runs of the game. Drey Barrett started it with a 450-foot, three-run home run in the first inning off Brendan Sweeney.
The Bulldogs then scored six unanswered runs for a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh inning. Southern Miss took the lead back in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring two runs off two wild pitches from Maddox Miller.
The two teams will play each other again at Dudy Noble Field in Starkville on March 24.

Maddox Miller threw two wild pitches to score two Southern Miss runs. The Golden Eagles now lead 7-6 in the seventh inning.
The Bulldogs have scored six unanswered runs to take a 6-5 lead in the seventh inning. Reed Stallman and Ryder Woodson both hit RBI singles.
Noah Sullivan doubled to right field to score two runs and cut Southern Miss’ lead to 5-2.
Then Reed Stallman hit a single for another run, but was thrown out at second base. Southern Miss leads 5-3 in the fifth inning.
His first career home run was a solo shot to right field in the fourth inning.
Shortstop Ryder Woodson dropped a pop fly that would’ve ended the inning. It allowed Ben Higdon to score for a 4-0 Golden Eagles lead in the second inning.
Mississippi State pulled pitcher Brendan Sweeney afterward, replacing him with Jack Gleason.
The Golden Eagles took a 3-0 lead in the first inning off Drey Barrett’s 450-foot, three-run home run.
Mississippi State starting center fielder Aidan Teel is not in the lineup. Mississippi State has not said why.
