Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe opted to bench Nick Pope for the encounter against Manchester Unietd – with Aaron Ramsdale taking his spot.

The Southampton loanee takes his place between the posts after the latest in a series of clangers from Pope, following a costly fumble against Everton which allowed Beto to score the second goal of the game in the 3-2 defeat. But Blyth battler Dan Burn retained his place in the starting line-up despite calls for a change from some fans.

When asked about loyalty before the game, Howe had said in his Press conference: “Loyalty to players that makes it sound like you pick players based on what they’ve done previously.

“That’s not the case. I’ll always pick players who I think give us the best chance to win the next game.

“That is a really simplistic view on how I see it. They have to train to the maximum level.

“I will always judge the next training session, as I’ve said the last game. If I think there is somebody better to pick, I have to pick them. for the benefit of the team. So that is my view on team selection.”

As expected Nick Woltemade missed the game due to a sickness bug meaning that Sandro Tonali, Joelinton and Jacob Ramsey made up the midfield three. Anthony Elanga and Harvey Barnes patrolled the flanks while Anthony Gordon led the line.

Newcastle: Ramsdale; Trippier, Thiaw, Burn, Hall; Ramsey, Tonali, Joelinton; Elanga, Barnes; Gordon

Subs: Pope, Botman, Wissa, Osula, J Murphy, Willock, A Murphy, Shahar, Neave
