Auto parts store owner picked up accused murderer days before triple homicide

The owner of an auto parts store in Loa, Utah, said he picked up accused murderer Ivan Miller after Miller hit an elk with his truck.

Ivan Miller, 22, of Blakesburg, Iowa, was charged with three first-degree felony counts of aggravated murder on Thursday afternoon for the killings of women in their 30s, 60s, and 80s.

Miller said he didn’t like to do it, but that it “had to be done.”

Gary Brian, the owner of Brian Auto Parts, said he got a call at about 10:30 p.m. on Saturday to pick up a vehicle that hit an elk on Highway 24.

He picked up the customer — later identified as Miller — and towed him back to where he was staying at the Snuggle Inn at about midnight.

“He visited with me; he was just a normal person,” Brian said.

Miller allegedly killed three women — two at a trailhead and one in her home — for money and cars about four days after he hit the elk.

According to Brian, Miller said he was just traveling through Utah but “didn’t act like he knew anyone here.”

“He didn’t act like someone that would do that,” Brian added. “He just acted like a normal person that I towed.”

Miller’s car was totaled, but he reportedly told Brian he was going to get a ride with his “brother” back to work.

He asked Brian if he could come back over the weekend to pick up his belongings from the truck, and Brian said, “Sure.”

Law enforcement found Miller in a stolen Subaru in Pagosa, Colorado, early Thursday morning.

He was charged with three counts of first-degree felony aggravated murder.

“I think everybody’s a little bit in shock,” Brian said.
