Raiders releasing Geno Smith after one woeful season

Geno Smith’s time in Las Vegas is up.
The Raiders are expected to release the former Jets quarterback, barring a trade, ahead of the start of the new league year next week, ESPN reported Friday.
Smith, 35, arrived in Las Vegas last offseason via a trade with the Seahawks and agreed to a two-year, $75 million contract extension that included $66.5 million guaranteed.

The trade reunited Smith with his former coach, Pete Carroll, who helmed the Seahawks from 2010-23. The Raiders hired Carroll, 74, last January.
Not a whole lot went right in Las Vegas, with Smith tossing 19 touchdowns against 17 interceptions in 15 games en route to a dismal 3-14 campaign.
The team fired Carroll and secured the No. 1 overall pick in April’s draft, with the new Klint Kubiak regime expected to select Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza first overall.

In moving on from Smith, the Raiders will free up $8 million in cap space while also carrying a dead cap hit of $18.5 million.
The organization is said to have been “aggressively shopping” the former second-round pick “the past few days,” according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
The 39th overall pick by the Jets in 2013, Smith had a rollercoaster four-season run with Gang Green that included a broken jaw at the hands of a teammate over a $600 debt.
He signed with the crosstown Giants in 2017 before heading west to the Chargers the following year.
Smith joined the Seahawks in 2019 and played his way to a Pro Bowl nod and Comeback Player of the Year honors in 2022.
The Seahawks turned their attention to another former Jet last offseason, quarterback Sam Darnold, who helped guide the team to a Super Bowl victory in February.
