The A.J. Brown trade possibility saga could come to an end soon.
The Patriots have been a rumored landing spot for the standout wide receiver since last year, as the player’s relationship with Philadelphia has gone downhill.
New England reportedly made an offer to the Eagles for Brown, 29, but the Eagles rejected it, according to Philadelphia sports radio host Anthony Gargano.
“I do know that the Patriots have made an offer for A.J.,” he said on his “The Anthony Gargano Show” Friday. “It’s around a one and a three (first-round and third-round NFL Draft picks). Not sure if the one is this year or next year, but I hear it’s a one and a three, and [Eagles general manager] Howie [Roseman] said no.”
New England’s reported offer nearly matches Philadelphia’s rumored asking price. The Eagles are seeking a first-round “with a second-round sweetener,” according to NFL insider Mike Garafolo earlier this week.
Garafolo also appeared on Gargano’s show Friday and spoke about the Patriots and Brown link. Garafolo noted that Philadelphia isn’t budging on its steep asking price, but that New England needs to decide soon if it’s willing to up its offer or seek WR help elsewhere.
“Howie is holding firm,” Garafolo said. “Now, really, all eyes are toward New England, right now, if that’s a possibility. You know the connection there. It’s been talked about, and they definitely have been talking to him. There’s no question in my mind, and they have to make a decision, because they’re coming up on free agency here and Alec Pierce has been a guy that’s been mentioned in connection to New England. … Even though there’s not supposed to be, I’m sure there’s been talk between the Patriots and Alec Pierce.”
While there are no public reports about New England being interested in Pierce, a WR whom the Indianapolis Colts opted not to franchise tag earlier this week, signing him is a realistic route for the Patriots to take to aid in replacing Stefon Diggs. New England cut ties with Diggs earlier this week.
The NFL’s legal tampering period begins on March 9 at noon Eastern Time, and the official start of free agency starts on March 11 at 4 p.m. ET.
Between now and then, Garafolo says he believes if Brown does get dealt, which he thinks will happen, it will occur this weekend.
“I think he gets moved. Today’s Friday. It’s gotta happen in the next two days. So, buckle up today,” Garafolo said.
The Athletic’s Diannia Russini echoed Garafolo’s timeline Friday, outlining the same “two days” timeframe on X.
“The Eagles and teams are involved in A.J. Brown trade discussions and want the situation resolved in the next couple of days so they can move on to the rest of their offseason planning and identify other players on their wishlists,” Russini wrote.
Brown played under current Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel for three years with the Tennessee Titans (2019-21) until he was traded to Philadelphia. The WR recently said he used to “hate” Vrabel, but the two are close now, further igniting trade speculation.
Vrabel spoke about his relationship with Brown at the NFL Combine last month, but declined to comment on the organization’s interest in acquiring him.
“I’ve watched him grow. I’ve watched him mature. I’m proud of him, proud of the father that he is. I’m proud of the husband,” Vrabel said. “That has nothing to do with where he plays or where he played. Those are the things that are important.
“We reach out and text each other during the good things that happen to each other. Sometimes things don’t go so well for the people that you’re close with, and you text for those as well. It’s a two-way street of support and reminders of what got us to where we are here today.”
