Boozer, Brown, Scheyer lead Duke to near sweep of ACC honors :: WRAL.com

No. 1 Duke won the ACC regular-season title and earned the top seed in this week’s ACC Tournament — and now the Blue Devils won a near sweep of the league’s top honors.

Freshman forward Cameron Boozer earned ACC Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors, forward Maliq Brown was named Defensive Player of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year and Jon Scheyer took the league’s Coach of the Year Award.

It was fitting for a team that dominated the ACC — and is poised to earn the No. 1 overall seed in next week’s NCAA Tournament. Duke is 29-2 overall and 17-1 in the ACC.

Boozer is the fifth freshman to win player of the year, joining Cooper Flagg (2025), Zion Williamson (2019), Marvin Bagley III (2018) and Jahlil Okafor (2015). All played at Duke.

A Blue Devil has won the top award 20 times, a list that includes Danny Ferry (twice), JJ Redick (twice), Christian Laettner, Grant Hill and Flagg, who was the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft.

The All-ACC teams and awards were determined by an 86-member panel made up of the league’s 18 head coaches and 68 members of the media. Coaches can’t vote for their own players.

Boozer, the son of former Duke great Carlos Boozer, led Duke with 22.7 points, 10.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game in the regular season. He had 26 points, 15 rebounds and five assists in the Blue Devils’ victory over rival North Carolina on Saturday, an exclamation point on his terrific season. Boozer, at 6-foot-9 and 250 pounds, shot 40.7% from 3-point range to lead Duke.

Boozer was second in the ACC in scoring, behind Stanford’s Ebuka Okorie (23.1 points per game), and led the league in rebounds.

Brown was the leader of the nation’s top-ranked defense. He has a team-high 60 steals and 168 deflections. A former ACC All-Defensive team member at Syracuse, Brown has been a force on the defensive end in his two years at Duke. He beat teammate Dame Sarr for defensive honors.

Brown also took home the league’s Sixth Man of the Year award.

Scheyer, a former Duke player who took over for legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski, is 118-24 as the Blue Devils head coach. Duke is 64-6 in the last two seasons. Scheyer blended a team with capable returners and another talented freshman class, led by Boozer, into the nation’s top team.

Former Scheyer assistant Jai Lucas, who led Miami to a No. 3 seed in the ACC Tournament in his first season, finished second in the voting behind Scheyer.

Wake Forest’s Juke Harris was named Most Improved Player.

North Carolina’s Caleb Wilson, who has missed the last seven games and is out for the season, was a first-team All-ACC pick. Teammate Henri Veesaar earned second-team honors.

NC State’s Quadir Copeland and Duke’s Isaiah Evans made the third-team. NC State’s Darrion Williams, who was the preseason player of the year in the conference, earned honorable mention.
