Imagine scratching a lottery ticket and discovering you’ve won millions of dollars. Well, Jose Fernandes and Yancy Contreras Menjivar don’t have to imagine.

After purchasing a ticket at the Mobil gas station at 386 Main St. in Melrose, Jose Fernandes of Woburn claimed a $4 million grand prize in the lottery’s new “$4,000,000 Cash Doubler” instant ticket game, according to the Massachusetts State Lottery.

Fernandes is the first player to claim the game’s top prize, which went on sale Feb. 17, according to a statement from lottery officials.

Fernandes chose the cash option for his winnings and received a one-time payment of $2.6 million before taxes, according to lottery officials.

He told lottery officials that he plans to use the money to purchase a house.

The Melrose Mobil location that sold the ticket will receive a $40,000 bonus from the lottery for the sale, according to the lottery.

Two additional $4 million grand prizes remain available in the “$4,000,000 Cash Doubler” instant ticket game, according to the lottery.

Another recent big lottery win came from Nantucket, where Yancy Contreras Menjivar claimed a $2 million prize in the Massachusetts State Lottery’s “$2,000,000 Stacked” instant ticket game, according to lottery officials.

Contreras Menjivar chose the cash option for her prize, receiving a one-time payment of $1.3 million before taxes, according to the lottery.

Contreras Menjivar’s winning ticket was purchased at Old South Diner, located at 57 Old South Rd. in Nantucket. The business will receive a $20,000 bonus for selling the ticket, according to the lottery.

Lottery officials said Old South Diner has been a particularly lucky location: Since March 2024, the shop has sold four instant-ticket prizes worth $1 million or more.

The “$2,000,000 Stacked” instant ticket game still includes 13 remaining $2 million grand prizes, according to the lottery.
