LGBTQ+ member ‘violently attacked’ on Queen Street

Mary the Night said a member of the LGBTQ+ community was attacked by three people while walking to an event
A local group that puts on events for the LGBTQ+ community says a member was violently assaulted on the weekend.
Mary the Night held an event on Saturday at Coch’s Corner.
Darcy Lillie, co-founder of the group, told SooToday the person who was attacked was a friend of the group, not a performer.
Lillie said the person who was attacked was at another local establishment before making their way to Coch’s to attend the Mary the Night event.
“He said three guys came up to him and basically started beating him up,” Lillie said.
The attackers allegedly used homophobic slurs during the attack.
“It was a targeted attack, in my mind,” Lillie said.
The victim was sent to hospital with a concussion and extensive bruising.
The attack was described by Mary the Night in a social media post made Monday.
“We are horrified that a member of our community was violently attacked on Queen Street,” the Facebook post said.
“That this happened on a night meant for celebration and safety is deeply upsetting.”
The post asked anyone with information about the attack to contact Sault Police.
“We stand in solidarity with our comrade who was attacked and wish them strength and a full recovery,” the post said.
SooToday has reached out to the police for more information.
