It has taken an 18-game unbeaten run but Lincoln have finally overhauled Cardiff to sit top of League One.

A return to the second tier of English football for the first time since 1961 is within touching distance with a 10-point gap to third-placed Bolton and only two of the top six still to play in their remaining 11 games.

“We want to play whatever small part in what could be a historical moment for the club and city. And it’s not that we need any extra motivation to do it, but it’s certainly on our minds that we can be part of something really special this season,” said midfielder Adam Reach after beating Cardiff on Saturday.

Runs like Lincoln’s do have to come to an end at some point and, having gone to south Wales at the weekend, a second lengthy trip may weigh heavy on weary legs.

Mind you Exeter have their own issues – winless in their past nine league games and hovering only six points clear of the relegation zone with returning boss Matt Taylor taking one point from his first two games
