LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho breaks his silence after FBI raid

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Los Angeles Unified Superintendent Alberto Carvalho is speaking out for the first time since being put on administrative leave after his home and office were raided by federal agents last month.
A statement, issued through a spokesperson and the law firm Holland & Knight, was first published in the Los Angeles Times.
“Mr. Carvalho remains confident that the evidence will ultimately demonstrate that he acted appropriately and in the best interests of students,” the statement said. “We hope the school board reinstates him promptly to his position as superintendent.”
“Mr. Carvalho respects the rule of law and the investigative process and has always acted in the best interests of students and within the bounds of the law,” Carvalho’s counsel said in a statement. “While the government’s investigation remains ongoing, no evidence has been presented by prosecutors supporting any allegation that Mr. Carvalho violated federal law.”
Carvalho was placed on administrative leave at the end of February after the FBI raided his home and the school district’s office.
Federal authorities have not provided details on the nature of the investigation.
Eyewitness News learned the FBI conducted an additional raid at a Florida home that records show belongs to a woman believed to be a consultant for the failed AI education startup AllHere, which provided an AI app to LAUSD but ended up dropping the tool shortly after.
Tuesday is the first day the school board hosts its first regular meeting since Carvalho was placed on administrative leave.
Among the issues before the board are labor agreements. Several labor unions spoke to Andres Chait, the school district’s acting superintendent, and school board members.
SEIU Local 99, which represent bus drivers, cafeteria workers and others, says it has been without a contract for years and its members have voted in favor of a strike.
However, the unions said they don’t want to be disruptive to students and families at a time LAUSD is already navigating uncertainty.
