Travis Kelce credits Taylor Swift for ‘motivating’ TE’s return for 14th season with Chiefs
That juice also keeps flowing as Kelce sees that the Chiefs are not just rolling over following Patrick Mahomes’ knee injury or a shocking 6-11 season in 2025. On the same day it was learned Kelce would make his return in 2026, the Chiefs also signed running back Kenneth Walker III, fresh off a Super Bowl victory and MVP performance in the Seahawks’ win over the Patriots.
“Making another run at it, baby, and the Chiefs are making moves,” Kelce said. “We got Brett Veach and Andy Reid getting the Super Bowl MVP — are you kidding me?”
Kelce admitted that it didn’t take long for him to realize he wanted more time on the field. The end to last season might have been difficult, but the offseason has helped turn the page quickly.
“I’m not gonna lie. It was pretty short and brief, and the Chiefs knew where I was the entire time on it,” Kelce said of his decision to play in 2026. “I think you always need to take a step back, breathe, let the emotions of the season settle down and see where the body is and things like that.
“But, man, I’m still, I’m still in love with this game. I still love going to work, putting on the pads, grinding it out, and just, you know, playing the game. And I think my best opportunity was playing for the Chiefs yet again and running this thing back with Pat Mahomes and coach Reid. Got my guy, (offensive coordinator) Eric Bieniemy back. There’s a lot of pieces in Kansas City that I absolutely love and I can’t wait to get back in the building with them.”
Kelce also views running it back with Bieniemy, who was the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2022, through a Swiftian lens. She uses “Easter eggs” — hidden messages or references to the past — in her music, and Kelce understood the significance … without trying to give away too many of her trade secrets.
“Yeah, the thing is, once I started dating Taylor, I started understanding what Easter eggs were,” he said when asked about his words following Bieniemy’s return to K.C. on Jan. 22. “You start kind of just placing those things all over the planet, and everybody starts to catch on. Um, yeah, that was a slip up — I didn’t even realize I said that.”
Kelce was coy about that. But he was less so about the Chiefs’ return to glory. Admittedly, Kelce isn’t ready to take on the world this minute — he’s had a “few too many garage beers” for that. But once he gets into proper shape, Kelce said he’s ready for the storm that’s brewing behind the scenes.
“I think the biggest thing (about) coming back was that we got to be even hungrier than we’ve been before,” Kelce said. “Talking to Pat, talking to coach (Andy) Reid and the guys, there’s a lot of dog mentality right now to get this thing fixed, and that mentality itself is already kind of motivating me to get to where I need to be during the season.”
That and a supportive wife.
