Meet Cagney & Lacey 80s star Tyne Daly’s famous family – including 3 daughters

Tyne Daly is a beloved figure in TV history thanks to her iconic 1980s role as Detective Mary Beth Lacey in Cagney & Lacey, alongside Sharon Gless as Christine Cagney.
First airing on CBS in 1982, the hit detective drama ran for seven seasons and propelled its two female leads to stardom. Tyne, 80, won four Emmys for Best Lead Actress in a Drama between 1983 and 1988, while the series picked up the Emmy for Outstanding Drama in 1985 and 1986.

Who are Tyne Daly’s parents?
Tyne is the daughter of actors James Daly and Mary Hope Newell, who also had three other children: actor Tim Daly, Mary Glynn and Pegeen Michael.
James, who died in 1978 aged 59, was best known for his role as Dr Paul Lochner in Medical Center opposite Chad Everett. He also appeared in productions including The Young Stranger, Planet of the Apes and Roots: The Next Generations.

Meanwhile, Tyne’s mother Mary Hope Newell enjoyed a brief career as an actress, appearing in an episode of Charlie’s Angels in 1979, as well as Starsky & Hutch in 1977. She passed away in 2009 aged 88.
Alongside Tyne, her brother Tim also followed in the acting industry and is best known for his roles as Dr Richard Kimble in The Fugitive and Joe Montgomery Hackett in Wings.
Reflecting on their upbringing, Tyne told the Big Issue that she’d known she wanted to be an actress by the age of eight.
“Both my parents were actors. We knew actors. Writers and directors were at our home, and I got to see some of the greats get really drunk and embarrass themselves, which was useful. So I did something very simple, which is to go into the family business,” she said.

While getting exposed to the industry at a young age provided her with a foot in the door, Tyne admitted it was a double-edged sword. “When you get in the door, you have to gauge whether people actually like your parents, which can be a learning experience!” she said. “But people think you’ve inherited your talent. I got some good lessons from exposure to the business, but didn’t get my talents from my dad or my mother.”

Like her parents, Tyne also married an actor and director, Georg Stanford Brown, best known for his roles as Tom Harvey in Roots and Officer Terry Webster in The Rookies. While the pair divorced after 24 years of marriage in 1990, they welcomed three daughters: Alisabeth, Kathryne and Alyxandra Brown.

Born in 1967, Alisabeth briefly followed in her parents’ footsteps behind the scenes on TV and film sets, working as a member of the production crew on Sister Act, Club Life and Vietnam War Story.
While she had aspirations to make a career in dance, Alisabeth struggled with the “narrowly defined criteria” in “predominantly white institutions”, according to her bio on Mink River, where she shared that she now works with ceramics and kiln-formed glass.

Kathryne, who was born three years after her sister in 1971, also grew up on film sets and followed her parents into acting, appearing in Cagney & Lacey: The Return alongside her mother, as well as Judging Amy and Linc’s alongside her father.
Tyne’s youngest daughter, Alyxandra, born in 1985, is also a creative, but didn’t go down the acting route. After studying a BA in English Literature, she founded Five Petal Creations, a Canadian small-batch baking business, with her husband Mark.
