Aberdeen head coach search: Dons given permission to speak to St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson

Aberdeen have been given permission to talk to St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson about replacing Jimmy Thelin at Pittodrie.
“St Mirren Football Club can confirm that we have been approached by Aberdeen FC to speak to manager Stephen Robinson in relation to their managerial vacancy,” said the Scottish Premiership club in a statement.
“Aberdeen have met a contractual clause in Stephen’s contract so the club has granted them permission to speak with him regarding the vacancy.

Robinson oversaw St Mirren’s Scottish Cup quarter-final win over Partick Thistle on Sunday, with the Northern Irishman having already guided the Paisley club to victory over Celtic in November’s League Cup final.

Meanwhile, Peter Leven has been in interim charge at the Dons since Thelin was sacked in early January, with the club having been close to appointing Eirik Horneland last month, only for uncertainty around a personal issue to stall his move to Pittodrie.

However, Leven has so far won just one of his eight games in temporary charge of the club, with the Dons down in ninth in the Scottish Premiership, while they also suffered a shock 3-0 loss at second-tier Dunfermline Athletic in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals on Saturday.
Aberdeen’s move for Robinson, 51, comes after chairman Dave Cormack recently revealed that the appointment of a new head coach had been delayed due to “unforeseen circumstances”.
He added that sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel had held talks with “several strong candidates from both the UK and overseas” and that the club “mustn’t rush or compromise” an appointment.
