Quentin Tarantino just might have been chased out of the United States by a group of crazed Paul Dano defenders. The filmmaker’s next project will be The Popinjay Cavalier on London’s West End. Tarantino will both write and direct the “swashbuckling” new play. Sonia Friedman Productions is producing and confirmed that the play is set in Europe in the 1830s (the end of the Victorian era) and called it a “rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise inspired by the grand swashbuckling epics of stage and screen.” Popular films in the genre include The Mark of Zorro, Ivanhoe, The Three Musketeers, and, more recently, The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The Popinjay Cavalier will premiere in early 2027 at a to-be-announced theater.

Tarantino previously said he was working on a play explicitly to get away from film because audiences aren’t attentive enough anymore. “Theater you can’t do that, and yeah, they pay a lot of money,” he said last year. “But you can’t tape it. There is no cell phone. You own the audience for the duration of the play every night. It’s a great night out. It’s worth it for them. That’s fucking exciting!” Just wait until he hears a phone go off in the theater — he’s going to go full Patti LuPone.
