Notre Dame, St. Mary Catholic eyeing gold balls as WIAA Girls State Tournament begins

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. (WLUK) — The 50th WIAA Girls State Basketball Tournament starts Thursday at the Resch Center as 20 teams hope to leave Ashwaubenon with a gold ball.

Two Northeast Wisconsin teams are competing in the tournament: Saint Mary Catholic in Division 4 and Notre Dame in Division 1.

No. 2 Saint Mary Catholic is the second game Thursday evening. They’re taking on No. 3 Albany/Monticello.

No. 4 Notre Dame plays at 6:35 p.m. Friday against No. 1 Wauwatosa East.

The Tritons are looking for their first state title since 2023, while the Zephyrs are hoping for their first since 2009.

The Girls State Basketball Tournament moved to the Resch Center in 2013. The first tournament was held at the UW Field House in Madison in 1976.
