The Welsh superstar had been heavily linked with the controversial R360 breakaway competition — a big-money project attempting to lure some of the game’s biggest names away from traditional rugby structures.
Had he made the switch, it would likely have meant stepping away from Wales again. Players joining the proposed league were expected to be ineligible for international rugby, meaning Rees-Zammit could have effectively walked away from Test rugby after the 2026 Six Nations.
However, those plans were ultimately shelved after the launch of the R360 league was delayed, removing the immediate opportunity for players to make the switch.
Bristol move changes everything
With the breakaway competition pushed back, Rees-Zammit instead committed his future to Bristol Bears by signing a new deal with the Premiership club following his explosive return from the NFL.
Bristol had moved quickly to secure the 24-year-old after he decided to leave American football and return to rugby in 2025, and he wasted little time reminding fans of his world-class speed — including a stunning long-range try shortly after his return.
From NFL gamble back to rugby
Rees-Zammit famously stepped away from rugby in March 2024 to pursue a career in the NFL through the International Player Pathway Programme.
During his time in the United States he spent spells with both the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars before ultimately deciding to return to rugby in 2025.
Bristol moved quickly to bring him back to the Premiership, and he wasted little time reminding everyone of his world-class speed — including a stunning long-range try shortly after his return.
For Bristol, it’s a statement of intent.
And for Wales, it’s a huge relief.
