North Star Health Alliance and Wintergreen part ways

(WWNY) – North Star Health Alliance and consulting group Wintergreen have called it quits.

North Star announced on Friday that the two “have mutually agreed to conclude their formal contractual relationship.”

According to North Star, Wintergreen will “continue to provide transition support and advisory assistance over the next 30 days as NSHA works to provide a smooth transition and the resources to assure a path forward.”

“Wintergreen and (chief restructuring officer) Rob Bloom have provided valuable professionalism, guidance, and support during a critical period for our organization,” said Andrew Manzer, interim CEO. “We appreciate their partnership and the work they have done to help position North Star Health Alliance for continued progress. We wish them every success moving forward.”

North Star’s financial woes

North Star operates Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg, Carthage Area Hospital and Meadowbrook Terrace in West Carthage.

The alliance employs approximately 1,600 workers and is currently navigating Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

This week, North Star told a bankruptcy court judge it has one week to secure meaningful funding from the state Department of Health or face drastic cuts and closures.

North Star’s financial difficulties began last spring after talks with the state Department of Health broke down and state funding was cut off.

Questions over Wintergreen spending

Wintergreen’s website states the firm helps rural healthcare organizations focus on patients and financial performance. The firm lists work with 300 community hospitals across the country.

In recent weeks, the public has complained that the firm, at $450 an hour for its top employees, was too expensive.

7 News has since learned that the price was among the cheapest bids for the service. Other options were for $810 an hour, almost double that of Wintergreen.
