Winners and Losers of 2025 Oscar Nominations

QUINCY (WGEM) – Oscar nominations for films released in 2025 have officially been announced.
Here is a look at some of the big winners and losers of the nominations.
The first big winner of the nominations is the film Sinners. Released in April, this mashup of horror, music, and the supernatural became one of the highest grossing movies of 2025.

It was also our number one movie of the year on Now Showing and now it officially holds the record for most Oscar nominations for one film. 16 nominations!
The nominations include Best Director for Ryan Coogler, Best Score for Ludwig Goransson, and Best Leading Actor for Michael B. Jordan.
For a film that already felt like a massive success after the critical response and the box office performance, this just feels like the cherry on top.
It got more nominations than movies like Titanic and Oppenheimer. It has a really good chance to win several of these categories as well.
Another big winner from Oscar nominations is the film Frankenstein. A winter release, the film got mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike.

But clearly the Oscars voting body really liked it. The movie got 9 Oscar nominations with one of the biggest surprises being Jacob Elordi being nominated in Best Supporting Actor.
The star of the HBO Max show Euphoria turned heads with his performance as Frankenstein’s monster.
His movements and the way he conveyed emotions without words blew me away when I watched the movie.
I’m not sure if he has a very good chance to win, but it’s definitely a cool nomination.
The last winner I’ll be writing about is Timothee Chalamet. Deemed by many as the only true Gen Z movie star, Chalamet was everywhere this past year promoting his starring role in Marty Supreme.

With his Best Lead Actor nomination, Chalamet became the youngest actor to get three lead actor nominations since Marlon Brando in the 1950s. Chalamet burst onto the scene in the late 2010s with roles in movies like Call Me By Your Name, Lady Bird, and Little Women. His star has only further grown thanks to roles in the Dune franchise and the movie Wonka.
This nomination seems to confirm that Chalamet may really be the youngest big movie star working today.
The first big loser of the Oscar nominations is Wicked: For Good. The first Wicked film received 10 Oscar nominations and had 2 wins for Production Design and Costume Design.

Wicked: For Good was not as well liked among the film critic community, but it was still a shock to not see it get any nominations.
Especially in categories that it won last year. It also came as a surprise to see Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande not get nominated for their roles as Elphaba and Glinda.
They both got nominated a year ago for the same roles and were both considered early favorites to potentially win at this year’s Oscars. Somehow both missed out just like the rest of the film.
Another loser from Oscar nominations is the movie Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere. Music biopics have been a mainstay in movies for years and have recently become very popular.

Bohemian Rhapsody famously cleaned up at the Oscars in 2019 winning 4 including wins for Film Editing and for Rami Malek’s performance as Freddie Mercury.
Just last year, the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown earned 8 Oscar nominations. I think the team behind Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere assumed their film would fall in line with these.
They did everything right, they recreated several of Springsteen’s hit songs and they cast a young star in Jeremy Allen White.
Unfortunately for them, this one just never got as much traction as the others. I think this lack of momentum made it miss out on some nominations.
The last loser I wanted to write about is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. He’s obviously not a loser, he’s one of the biggest and most beloved movie starts in the world.

He’s starred in numerous massive movies. But his return to dramatic acting in the Smashing Machine was supposed to be his chance at Oscars glory.
It’s happened before like when Matthew McConaughey went from starring in romantic comedies to winning a Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Dallas Buyer’s Club.
The Rock was hoping he could follow suit, but The Smashing Machine flopped at the box office and received mixed reviews from critics. His performance is actually really great.
But in a stacked year where he was going up against actors like Leonardo Dicaprio, Michael B. Jordan, and Ethan Hawke, he just didn’t break through.
