Iran war latest: Drones and rockets fired at US embassy – as Trump admits ‘shock’ at Iran attacks

Iran’s security chief has been killed, Israel’s defence minister has said.

Israel Katz said Ali Larijani was killed in an overnight Israeli strike.

However, Iran appeared to deny the report by posting a handwritten note it claimed was written by Larijani on his social media account minutes later.

The note paid tribute to Iranian sailors killed in a US submarine attack on its Dena warship on 4 March. It said:

“On the occasion of the funeral ceremony for the valiant martyrs of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Navy: Their memory will forever remain in the heart of the Iranian nation, and these martyrdoms will strengthen the foundation of the Islamic Republic’s Army for years to come within the structure of the armed forces.”

Larijani – a key adviser to Iran’s former supreme leader, Ali Khamenei – was among the senior Iranian figures seen in public at an Al Quds Day protest in Tehran on Friday.

A day earlier, he directly addressed Donald Trump on social media when he said: “While starting a war is easy, it cannot be won with a few tweets. We will not relent until making you sorry for this grave miscalculation.”
