JCPS superintendent explains occasional driver, denies having a dedicated chauffeur

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Questions have circulated online about whether Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood has a personal driver paid for by JCPS.

Yearwood said he does not have a dedicated driver but occasionally is driven to meetings.

“Occasionally if I’m going to a meeting where there are parking issues or something like that, then yes, someone will take me there,” said Dr. Brian Yearwood, JCPS superintendent.

“But as far as a driver bringing me to work and from work, no, there’s nothing like that.”

Yearwood said the employee who occasionally drives him works for the district and has assisted multiple superintendents over the years.

“He’s done this for multiple superintendents,” said Yearwood.

“It was a natural part of being able to navigate Louisville, especially being new to the city, and making sure I can get to meetings in a timely manner.”

District records show the employee’s job title is driver/courier, and the position earns more than $60,000 annually.

Yearwood’s contract also provides a $750 monthly car stipend, on top of his more than $350,000 yearly salary.
