Blowing snow warning Tuesday, OPP report severe icy road conditions

Tuesday morning in Waterloo Region started with a blowing snow advisory, and a warning from police about severely icy roads.

The OPP sent out a message on social media around 1:30 a.m. about a collision between two transport trucks, around the 401 and Fountain Street South in Cambridge.

Their post said the crash happened “during severe icy road conditions.”

It went on to warn “Motorists are strongly urged to avoid unnecessary travel. Be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.”

The OPP said the collision meant the Fountain Street on-ramp to Highway 401 eastbound had to be closed for public safety, and to allow for emergency response and vehicle recovery.

Environment Canada sent out a yellow level advisory for blowing snow, Monday night.

It warned of poor visibility in snow and blowing snow, with a westerly wind gusting to 70 km/h.

The weather agency said “travel will likely be hazardous due to near-zero visibility.”

It said snowfall amounts up to 10 cm are possible, but conditions should slowly improve Tuesday morning as winds ease up.
