After more than 25 years in this seat, Jan Schakowsky is retiring, setting off a crowded Democratic primary to succeed her. Daniel Biss, the mayor of Evanston, has the endorsements of Senators Elizabeth Warren and Tammy Duckworth as well as the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Among his top challengers are Kat Abughazaleh, a journalist endorsed by Track AIPAC, a group opposed to the Israel lobby, and Laura Fine, a state senator backed by AIPAC. Four Republicans are competing in their party’s primary, but the district has not elected a Republican since 1946.
