Blue Jays’ Trey Yesavage to begin season on IL with shoulder issue

The Toronto Blue Jays will be down another starting pitcher to begin the 2026 season.
Right-hander Trey Yesavage will start the campaign on the injured list as he deals with a right shoulder impingement, manager John Schneider announced on Thursday, per Sportsnet’s Arden Zwelling.
Yesavage reported to camp with the issue, which was part of the reason for his slow buildup in the spring, added Zwelling.
The other part of that equation is the heavy workload he endured last season — in particular the post-season.
The 22-year-old pitched in three regular season games before making five starts during the Jays’ post-season run, totalling 41.2 innings.
He also progressed through all minor-league ranks before reaching the MLB in one season.
“Where (Yesavage) ends up to start, I don’t want to say we’re not really worried about, we have a definitive plan for him and we’re working together with him to see where that may start or when that may start, really,” said Schneider on Wednesday. “I don’t think that it’s set in stone, really, as of now even though we’re leaving on Monday.”
Yesavage is the latest to join Toronto’s growing list of injured starters, joining Jose Berrios and Shane Bieber.
Berrios is dealing with a stress fracture in his right elbow, and although he’s pain-free, he will be out for the start of the season.
Bieber, meanwhile, continues to rehab a forearm injury. Last season’s trade deadline acquisition is “progressing well, feeling good, hitting every benchmark he needs to hit,” said Schneider on Thursday.
“Not putting a timeline on it, but we’re looking at hopefully touching the mound here fairly soon.”
