High Point sharpshooter Chase Johnston entered the men’s NCAA tournament with the absolutely wildest shot chart. So, it was only fitting he broke that trend at the most important time.
Ahead of Thursday’s first-round matchup against No. 5 seed Wisconsin, Johnston had attempted 136 shots from the field with 132 of them being from three-point range. He was 0 for 4 on two-point field goals. And really, he’s everything that is great about the NCAA tournament:
A previously unknown player rocking No. 99 who just lets it fly from three-point range.
And while there was plenty of that from Johnston on Thursday, he chose the perfect moment to make his first two-point field goal of the entire season.
With time winding down under 15 seconds and High Point down by one, Johnston broke ahead and received the outlet pass to set up the go-ahead layup for the Panthers.
Again, it was his FIRST two-point make all year. Just a diabolical time for that to happen, especially since we were used to seeing this from the High Point guard.
Well, now he can give you both. That’s versatility!
With the 83-82 win, High Point will await the winner of Arkansas-Hawaii in the second round.
