Butler’s talented freshman class breaking up with 2nd player planning to enter transfer portal

Butler basketball freshman Jack McCaffery plans to enter the transfer portal per The Field of 68.
McCaffery joins Jamie Kaiser Jr. as players to announce their intentions to enter the transfer portal, one day after coach Thad Matta announced his retirement. The transfer portal doesn’t open until April 7
McCaffery came to Butler as a four-star recruit, a member of Butler’s highest-rated recruiting class. The 6-foot-8 forward played in just nine games before complications from emergency dental surgery forced him to lose about 15 pounds, leading him to pursue a medical redshirt. McCaffery averaged 2.8 points and 1.6 rebounds in a reserve role.
McCaffery is the younger brother of Butler assistant coach Connor McCaffery, and son of Penn coach Fran McCaffery. Middle brother Patrick played for Butler during the 2024-25 season.
With McCaffery and Kaiser Jr. entering the portal, 10 players remain on Butler’s roster: Finley Bizjack, Jackson Keith, Jalen Jackson, Ethan McComb, Efeosa Oliogu-Elabor, Drayton Jones, Azavier “Stink” Robinson, Bryson Cardinal and Kevin Ndzie.
