Who is Johnny Dawkins? Age, record for UCF basketball coach, Duke legend

Johnny Dawkins has been in the public eye for nearly 45 years.
He starred as Duke’s point guard in the mid-1980s. He moved on to a nine-year NBA career, even competing in the dunk contest in 1987.
And after his playing days concluded, he transitioned into coach — first as an assistant with his alma mater and then the last 18 years in the big chair.

Dawkins is making his third NCAA Tournament trip as a head coach. He appeared with Stanford in 2014 and piloted UCF during Tacko Fall’s run in 2019.
Now, the Knights are back in March Madness after a seven-season hiatus. They accumulated a 21-11 overall record and a 9-9 mark in the Big 12 entering their first-round game against UCLA.
Here’s a breakdown on their longtime leader.
Johnny Dawkins age
Dawkins is 62 years old. He’ll turn 63 on Sept. 28.
How long has Johnny Dawkins been UCF basketball coach?
In nearly three decades as a men’s college basketball coach, Dawkins has worked at only three schools. He spent a decade as an assistant at Duke before taking his first head-coaching gig at Stanford in 2008.
The Cardinal fired him in March 2016, but a week later, he landed at UCF and has remained there since. This is his 10th season in charge of the Knights.
Johnny Dawkins career record
Dawkins holds a career record of 345-246.
He went 156-115 in eight seasons at Stanford and is 189–131 with the Knights. That translates to an overall winning percentage of .584.
Johnny Dawkins contract
Dawkins signed a two-year contract extension in June 2024.
This season, he pocketed a salary of $2.1 million, the lowest figure among Big 12 leaders. His $2.2 million salary for next season, the last year on his deal, is not guaranteed.
Johnny Dawkins was March Madness star as Duke player
Long before he was coaching in the NCAA Tournament, Dawkins thrived as a player in it.
He was one of the early stars of Mike Krzyzewski’s legendary tenure as Blue Devils coach, pacing them in scoring each of his four seasons from 1982 to 1986.
Dawkins played on three NCAA Tournament squads. During his senior year, the team captain helped Duke to an ACC Tournament title and a March Madness national championship game, where it lost to Louisville.
He also won the Naismith Player of the Year award during his final campaign and became the Blue Devils’ first two-time first-team All-American.
Dawkins finished his career as the program’s all-time leading scorer — the mark has since been broken. The team retired his No. 24 jersey.
Johnny Dawkins’ NBA career included Philadelphia 76ers stint
The San Antonio Spurs drafted Dawkins 10th overall in 1986.
After three seasons, they traded him to Philadelphia to kickstart his five years with the 76ers. He’s back in the city for the NCAA Tournament this week.
“I love Philly,” Dawkins said. “I was very fortunate to play with some great, great players; of course, played with the great Charles Barkley, thinking about memories of winning the (Atlantic Division), and going and playing in the (Eastern Conference) semis. That was an amazing experience here.”
Dawkins wrapped up his playing career with one season with the Detroit Pistons in 1994-95. He averaged 11.1 points and 5.5 assists per game across nine years in the league.
Johnny Dawkins is no stranger to Mick Cronin teams
Dawkins and UCLA head coach Mick Cronin have matched wits six previous times. UCF and Cronin’s former program, Cincinnati, both competed in the American Athletic Conference before joining the Big 12. Cronin holds a 4-2 edge in the series.
March 20 marks the first meeting between the Knights and Bruins.
