Who was Zelda?

Zelda was a woman from the Romani traveller community who stole a watch from Tommy Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy) at the Appleby Horse Fair in 1914.

After chasing after her, Zelda and Tommy slept together under a hazel tree and she fell pregnant.

Zelda’s father was left furious about his daughter’s pregnancy and shot Tommy in the chest with a squirrel gun; however, the gangster wasn’t injured and went off to the trenches in the First World War.

Tommy never saw Zelda again, nor did he contact her when he returned from the war.

He only learned of his son’s existence in Peaky Blinders season six when John Shelby’s (Joe Cole) wife Esme (Aimee-Ffion Edwards) took him to meet Duke Shelby (Conrad Khan).

Esme confirmed that Zelda had died and Duke was now working in the fairground as a thief, but wanted more from his life.

Tommy paid Esme gold and took Duke on. Despite getting off to a rocky start, Duke decided to join the “dark” side of Tommy’s business.

As per the Peaky Blinders Fandom page, at one point, Zelda became ill and was taken to the hospital in Bridgnorth, but was denied a bed and died that night.

After Duke learnt of his mother’s fate, he confronted the person who had refused her a bed and murdered them.

In Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, the mysterious spirit medium Kaulo (Rebecca Ferguson) is revealed to be the identical twin sister of Zelda.

Kaulo breaks into Tommy’s house during his self-imposed exile and urges him to save his son Duke (Barry Keoghan) after he becomes embroiled in a Nazi plot.

Zelda is technically never seen on screen in the Peaky Blinders TV series.

Speaking about the character of Kaulo, Silo star Ferguson said: “I like bringing in something otherworldly about her.

“I read about the gypsy culture and the raw money, and their beliefs, and what is important to them. Family. Heritage.

“With belief comes power and that’s something that my character also knows that she can manipulate out of people.”

Adding: “I feel like magic is bigger for her than the sense of belongingness.”
