So what happened to Morgan and Rodney in real life? The pair met as teenagers when Morgan was only 14 and Rodney, 17. Their idyllic romance blossomed over the years, and the couple married in 2009 when Morgan turned 21. But a series of family tragedies — including the loss of his brother to leukemia and the loss of their first child to a heart defect — changed Rodney for the worse. Soon after Morgan birthed their twins, in 2012, Rodney lost his job and became steadily more abusive, both emotionally and physically. After years of Rodney telling Morgan she was to blame for the violence inflicted upon her, Morgan filed for divorce in 2020.

But what should have been a fresh start turned into a nightmare on New Year’s Eve, just a month after the divorce was finalized. A masked prowler broke into Morgan’s home with a gun and threatened her in a voice reminiscent of a Batman villain. The assailant then proceeded to zip-tie, beat, and sexually assault her before grabbing jewelry and cash, and then fleeing the scene. Forty minutes later, Rodney arrived to cut her free of her restraints. When he told the police that he rushed over to Morgan’s house because a stranger had knocked on his apartment window calling out for her, they realized the details of Rodney’s story were designed to make him look like the hero. Instead, his diabolical attempt to become Morgan’s savior and win her back landed him a 70-year sentence — with the first 30 years to be served in prison, and the remaining 45 on probation. Rodney is no longer allowed contact with Morgan or their children.
