Retiree ashamed of TVA affiliation
For more than 25 years, I was proud to represent TVA as a resource planning engineer, helping ensure reliable, affordable and environmentally responsible electricity to the residents of the Valley. For the first time in my life, following the recent board meeting, I am extremely disheartened — even embarrassed — to say I am affiliated with TVA, even as a retiree.
Four decisions approved by an all-male, Trump-appointed board that should give all of us pause.
1. TVA will eliminate all reference to diversity, equity and inclusion in its personnel documents, activities and strategic goals;
2. TVA will eliminate the preference for renewable energy in its acquisition of new resources;
3. TVA will eliminate all carbon metrics from its asset assessment mechanisms; and
4. TVA will continue operating over 3,800 MW of some of the most carbon-intensive generation in the U.S., thanks to President Trump who promoted a theme of energy dominance, allowing us to continue to burn “clean, beautiful coal.”
Finally, in its overview of future resource acquisition, TVA will continue to complete natural gas, small nuclear, pumped hydro, and yet makes no mention of other renewable resources.
Perhaps TVA should eliminate CLEAN and INNOVATIVE from its mission statement.
