Leicester vs Bristol preview
The Leicester Tigers and Bristol Bears went into this round of Premiership fixtures sitting third and fourth in the standings and this is a key clash in their bid to stay in the playoff places.
It’s two months since the Premiership took a break for the Six Nations but in the meantime Leicester’s fringe players have lifted the Premiership Cup, beating Exeter in last weekend’s final.
There’s no room to wallow in that glory, however, as head coach Geoff Parling makes six changes to his side, bringing his significant international cadre straight back into action.
England forwards Ollie Chessum and Joe Heyes both start alongside Nicky Smith and Olly Cracknell of Wales while Freddie Steward lines up at full-back.
Bristol are strengthened by the return of captain Steve Luatua plus winger Gabriel Ibitoye, the top tryscorer in the Premiership last season who has been sidelined since the opening round.
But the Bears are still missing a raft of players and Six Nations stars Ellis Genge, Tom Jordan and Louis Rees-Zammit are all absent from Sunday’s squad.
Bristol have won their last five Premiership matches, a run that started on November with an impressive 46-12 demolition of table-topping Northampton.
They have lost just two of ten matches but both of those were heavy defeats on the road as they went down 50-17 at Saracens and 40-15 at Bath.
They face similarly heavyweight opposition on Sunday and given their lengthy list of absentees, this could be another game that gets away from them.
Bristol finished bottom of their Premiership Cup pool so haven’t been in action since mid-February and the celebrations from last Sunday’s final at Welford Road may well be echoed this week.
