The Sounders come into the match riding a fair amount of momentum, having now won straight and coming directly off eliminating the Vancouver Whitecaps from Concacaf Champions Cup play. That’s the same Whitecaps team that just beat Minnesota United 6-0.

Opposition players to watch
James Rodriguez – It’s still unclear what role the Colombian will play, but he is expected to make his home debut after getting his first minutes since joining Minnesota last week.
Neco Triantis – The midfielder has been one of the bright spots for United ever since arriving from Sunderland last year. He’s deployed as an 8 in this 3-4-3 system and is perfectly capable of moments of magic.
Stats to look smart
40 – The Seattle Sounders have failed to top 40% of possession in any of their past four games, all wins.
45 – Minnesota United is averaging 45% possession this year, not exactly a lot but they are up to 20th in the league after setting a MLS record by keeping the ball less than 40% last year.
Tactics to impress
- The Sounders certainly haven’t given up on possession soccer, but they have shown much more willingness to absorb pressure and get numbers behind the ball in the early stages of 2026 than they did at any point last year. With another game on short rest, this seems unlikely to be the game that changes.
- Minnesota is still very much trying to find their identity under new head coach Cameron Knowles. So far, it looks like United would like to play a bit more but they’ve also struggled to turn that into anything like consistent results. Last week, that bottomed out with a 6-0 loss to the Whitecaps, the worst loss in Minnesota history.
