Coronation Street’s original Bethany Platt

Former Coronation Street stars who played Bethany Platt are now a world away from their Weatherfield alter-egos 18 years after their soap exit.

In 2000, a storyline that shocked ITV soap viewers nationwide unfolded when 13-year-old Sarah Platt, played by Tina O’Brien, became pregnant with a baby girl.

This groundbreaking plot was one of the first instances where a British soap opera addressed teenage pregnancy. This significant chapter in Corrie’s history aimed to shed light on the repercussions and real-life challenges of becoming a mother at a young age.

Sarah and her mother, Gail Platt, played by Helen Worth, discovered the pregnancy when they took Sarah to the doctor, suspecting she had an eating disorder.

Upon learning that she was five months pregnant, they kept the news under wraps in Weatherfield until word got out, leading to Sarah being subjected to cruel comments and jibes.

While her parents suspected an older man was the baby’s father, it was actually Neil Fearns, a schoolmate of Sarah’s, played by Paul Holowaty.

Twins Emily and Amy Walton shared the role of Sarah Platt’s daughter for seven years from 2000 to 2007, replacing Mia Cookson who had played Bethany as a baby for several episodes.

The twins were involved in several major plot twists, including Bethany’s kidnapping by her paternal grandmother, Brenda Fearns (Julia Deakin), in 2004.

While in other dramatic scenes, Bethany took an Ecstasy pill that her uncle had stashed inside her doll and ended up in the hospital.

Bethany left, alongside her mother, in 2007 when the pair moved to Italy, and the twins no longer had a role on the soap.

Since starring on the popular soap, the twins have moved away from acting and pursued other ventures, particularly in sport. The Lancashire-born pair were born in March 2000 and competed in the British Trampoline finals in 2016.

Amy secured a place on the Great British trampoline team for the European Championships the following year. They had competed together in the British Trampoline finals.

Last year, Emily uploaded an Instagram photo of herself and her sister. The duo looked happy together as they enjoyed a holiday in Thailand.

The caption read: “The last of Thailand,” alongside a yellow heart emoji.

Despite the sisters leaving the role as Bethany, the character returned to the Weatherfield cobbles eight years later, with Lucy Fallon taking over proceedings.

Over the years, Bethany has been caught up in gripping storylines, including being groomed by Nathan Curtis, played by Christopher Harper. She also had to get a stoma bag following a botched surgery.

Coronation Street airs weekdays on ITV and ITVX
