Syracuse to play Providence in Boston next season

Syracuse, N.Y. ― Syracuse and Providence, two former Big East rivals, will meet next season in at the TD Garden in Boston.

It will be the first meeting between the two schools since Syracuse left the Big East after the 2012-13 season.

Jon Rothstein of CBS first reported the match-up. A source confirmed the neutral court game for Syracuse.com.

The Syracuse-Providence meeting will carry a lot of intrigue and drama as the two schools recently went through overlapping coaching searches.

Syracuse fired former coach Adrian Autry after back-to-back losing seasons.

Syracuse officials are reportedly finalizing a deal to bring Syracuse legend Gerry McNamara as the next head coach. McNamara recently completed his second year as the head coach at Siena. This season, McNamara guided the Saints to the school’s first NCAA tournament appearance since 2010.

Providence also searched for a new coach after letting Kim English go after three mediocre seasons. Last week, Providence officials agreed to a deal with South Florida’s Bryan Hodgson.

Hodgson, a Western New York native, had been linked to the Syracuse opening. There were reports last week that Hodgson had pulled his name out of consideration for the Syracuse job.
