Magnitude-4.2 earthquake strikes west of Port Hardy

A 4.2-magnitude earthquake was measured off the coast of Vancouver Island early Sunday afternoon, according to EmergencyInfoBC.

The quake struck around 250 kilometres southwest of Port Hardy shortly before 12:30 p.m.

No damage or injuries were reported.

The USGS registered the quake at 4.0. It says the location lies on the Queen Charlotte fault system.

There are frequent small quakes along this particular part of the system, it says, with larger quakes taking place relatively rarely. Some of the most recent significant quakes over a magnitude of 7 took place in October 2012, at 7.8, and then four months later, in January 2013, with a magnitude of 7.5.

Nearby, on a different section of the fault about 200 kilometres west of Bella Bella, a 7.8-magnitude quake was registered on Sept. 15, 2024.

The largest ever recorded in this system was in 1949, at an 8.0 magnitude, resulting in a minor tsunami — a rare occurrence for this particular fault type.
