Robert Kirkman doubles down on this long-awaited Walking Dead adaptation

For years, The Walking Dead franchise has expanded outward with multiple spinoffs and character-driven continuations. But beneath it all, there’s one idea that has quietly haunted the fanbase for years.
No, it’s not a continuation or a reboot. It’s something fans have never gotten, but have always wanted. It’s none other than an animated Walking Dead series. And now, Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman is once again making it clear. This isn’t just wishful thinking. It’s something he still deeply wants to see happen as well.

Back in the “Letter Hacks” column of The Walking Dead Deluxe #85 that was released in March 2024, Kirkman revealed that while he would love to see an animated adaptation of his comic come to life, it won’t be possible until he regains the rights from AMC. If you weren’t aware, AMC acquired the rights to adapt The Walking Dead comic book series for television in 2009.
While the full live-action television series adaptation has already been brought to life, the network still maintains tight control over how the story can be used. This effectively puts an animated adaptation on hold. Despite the franchise’s enormous success and the growing demand from fans, AMC’s rights ownership means Kirkman cannot move forward with the project on his own.
Kirkman made this statement years ago about wanting to make a Walking Dead animated series. Now in 2026, he’s doubling down on that desire, making it clear that the idea is far from forgotten. In a new episode of The Brandon Davis Show, Kirkman was asked whether he thought The Walking Dead could ever get an animated series that is a faithful adaptation of the comics. Below, we shared his exact response.
“Uh yeah. I mean, I think that it’s something that I think I would like to see at some point. Um you know, whether that happens or not is completely in the hands of AMC right now.”
So, it looks like Kirkman is just as passionate about this project in 2026 as he was years ago. The fact that he’s publicly doubling down on the idea reassures fans that an animated Walking Dead series isn’t just a passing thought. It’s a vision he genuinely wants to see realized. Hopefully, Kirkman and AMC can eventually come to an agreement that allows this long-awaited adaptation to finally come to life.
Honestly, hearing Kirkman speak so candidly about the possibility of an animated Walking Dead series is both exciting and a little bittersweet. On one hand, it’s incredibly reassuring to know that the creator himself hasn’t abandoned the idea, even after all these years and despite the legal roadblocks. On the other hand, it’s bittersweet because the project remains stuck in limbo for now.
Rights issues and corporate ownership often stifle creativity, and in this case, it’s preventing what could arguably be the ultimate Walking Dead experience. Fans have been waiting for a faithful adaptation of the comics for years, and while the live-action version did an impressive job of bringing the world to life, it also made creative changes and introduced new characters that deviated from the original story.
An animated series, however, could finally deliver the comics exactly as Kirkman envisioned them. Come on, AMC. Give the fans what they so desperately want!
