It has been reported that the Kennedy family wanted to bury John and Carolyn at the family plot in Massachusetts, but Lauren wasn’t allowed to be buried there as she wasn’t a member of the family. The Bessette family did not want the sisters to be separated.

JFK Jr.‘s former assistant RoseMarie Terenzio wrote in her 2024 book that she suggested to Caroline Kennedy that they should be cremated and buried together.

“I said, ‘Caroline, I think you should cremate them, and they should all stay together. I think John would want that.’ She wanted to honor her brother,” Terenzio wrote in the book (via People).

It was decided that John, Carolyn, and Lauren would be cremated and buried together at sea. Their ashes were scattered in the waters off Martha’s Vineyard, just one day after their bodies were recovered.

CNN reported in 1999, “The final resting place for JFK Jr., his wife and her sister was off Martha’s Vineyard, not far from where they died instantly last Friday when the aircraft piloted by Kennedy plunged into the ocean.”

17 family members from the Kennedy and Bessette families were on board the USS Briscoe for the ceremony.

The show has been criticized by John‘s nephew, who calls the series a “grotesque display.”
