If there was one bright spot in an otherwise forgettable innings against the Rajasthan Royals for the Chennai Super Kings, it was Jamie Overton refusing to go down without a fight.
On a chaotic opening day of IPL 2026 at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati, CSK’s batting imploded against RR.
CSK slumped to 41/4 inside the powerplay, with the top order offering little resistance against a disciplined RR attack led by Jofra Archer and company.
By 82/8 in just 12.5 overs, CSK went from trying to set a competitive total to simply surviving the innings. Because at that stage, even CSK’s lowest-ever IPL total looked under threat.
Overton’s Record-Breaking Resistance
Then came Jamie Overton.
Walking in with the innings in ruins, the England all-rounder produced a measured yet defiant 43 off 36 balls — an innings that now holds a unique place in CSK history.
His knock is officially the highest score by a CSK batter at No. 8 or below in IPL history, surpassing MS Dhoni’s previous best of 37* against Delhi Capitals in 2024.
But that wasn’t all.
Overton stitched together a crucial 33-run stand for the 10th wicket alongside Anshul Kamboj — now the third-highest 10th-wicket partnership in IPL history.
The all-rounder’s innings stood out, as he rotated strike smartly, picked his moments, and ensured CSK at least posted a lowly 127 runs on the board.
While the five-time champions will need their bowlers to step up quickly, if they are to put up any fight against RR’s fiery openers. But, at this point, all hope seems lost for CSK.
