Guyana forecasts up to sevenfold power demand increase

News

Peak demand in Guyana is projected to reach 1,575MW by 2030, up from 222MW in 2025 – a sevenfold increase.

Guyana Power & Light (GPL) provided the forecast during a presentation to the Public Utilities Commission. This year’s peak is expected to reach 286MW.

Electricity consumption is forecast to increase roughly sixfold by 2030, with offtake projected at 9,850GWh, compared with 1,485GWh last year.

Driven by Guyana’s oil boom, the country’s GDP is expected to remain the highest in the region. The World Bank forecasts growth of 19.6% and 21.9% in 2026 and 2027, respectively.

In terms of customers, GPL expects 305,800 by 2039, up from 244,124 in 2025.

To meet demand, more than 1,600MW of firm capacity and over 100MW of solar generation with battery energy storage systems are expected to be added, GPL said, highlighting gas-to-energy projects under development and the 165MW Amaila Falls hydro project.

Expansion and modernization of the transmission and distribution grid are also priorities, along with measures to advance distributed generation.
